High Point Friends Middle School Students Help Neighbors and Neighborhood Park

with Clean-Up after Ice Storm

High Point Friends Middle School planned a Service Learning Day on Monday, March 10th to help clean up debris in their neighborhood due to the ice storm.  The 5th and 6th grade students worked on cleaning up the campus of the School and the grounds of the High Point Friends Meeting.  The 7th and 8th grade students went off campus to the school’s neighborhood of Old Emerywood to assist with clean-up.  They completely cleared debris from the neighborhood park, Triangle Park, at the corner of Council Street and Parkway Drive in High Point.  Then they proceeded to help neighbors remove large trees and limbs from their yards.  The HPFS Middle School students and staff worked from 8:30am until 2:00pm helping as many neighbors as possible.

The Old Emerywood neighborhood was hit hard from the ice storm.  Many residents were still without power, and were so appreciative of the help they received from the students.  Several neighbors came out and told the students how proud of them they were for all of their hard work!

Mr. Girardi, HPFS Head of School, said ““the damage to the neighborhood was very extensive.  Numerous large trees were down and made the park unusable.  The students were finished cleaning it by 10:30 and then went on to help neighbors.  By afternoon there were children playing and using the playground equipment.  We are so proud of the way the students pitched in and worked so hard to help clear as much debris as possible.  As a Quaker school, our students did disaster relief in the best tradition of the American Friends Service.”
