High Point Friends School recognizes that participation in an extracurricular activity is a privilege offered to its students as well as an essential and valuable part of the middle school experience. While difficult to measure, the educational value of extracurricular participation is extensive and HPFS is committed to sponsoring a wide variety of competitive sports that promote growth, responsibility, and leadership skills. Students not only develop physical, mental, and social skills, but also positive values, teamwork, attitudes that they will take with them into their adult life.
Falcon Athletics is an integral and vibrant dimension of High Point Friend School’s culture with over 80% of our student athletes competing in one or more sport. Every team is try-out free, co-educational, and open to students of all skill levels. This, however, does not diminish our competitive drive. We have been a perennial postseason contender in volleyball and two time league champion. Last year, during the 2014 season, our 5th/6th grade basketball team finished undefeated making it our second team with a championship pedigree. In addition, the Athletics Program features opportunities for fellowship outings (HPU and Wake Forest University collegiate sports contests), Pep Rallies, Spirit Week, contests (the most recent being the name the mascot contest), concession stand operations, managers, and many more. The year culminates with a Sports Banquet in May where we honor all student-athletes, parents, coaches, sponsors, and friends of the program.
Furthermore, the Athletics program provides a unique opportunity to teach student-athletes more than just how to win and lose. The mission is to teach students how to win with honor and simultaneously be gracious in defeat while promoting respect for opponents and teammates. Our program encourages teamwork and a willingness to sacrifice and work hard with others towards a common goal. We strongly believe that academics come first and all students must adhere to the code of conduct in order to have the privilege to wear the Blue and White. We expect our student-athletes to be ambassadors in the community. We challenge all Falcons, current and present, to live our motto and SOAR HIGHER!
The Falcons compete in the ISL Conference, which includes members B’Nai Shalom Day School, Greensboro Montessori School, Noble Academy, New Garden Friends School, and The Piedmont School.
All grade 5-8 students are invited to participate in the following sports:
Soccer (early fall), Flag football (mid-fall), Volleyball (winter), Basketball: 5th/6th Grade & 7th/8th Grade Teams, (late winter) and Cross-Country (3K or 1.86 mile races in spring).
Many of our practices and home games take place in the Kingrey Center at High Point Friends School. Completed in 2009, it houses a state of the art gym and the performing arts center. In addition, the Kingrey Center has two rock climbing walls: one 22’ in height for older students and one 8’ in height for younger students.
